Special Circumstance Appeals
Financial aid awards are made on an annual basis after a careful review of the family's financial situation.  Families are required to complete a new Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or a Renewal FAFSA each year so that we can react to changes that may occur.

Step 1: File Your FAFSA
The fastest way to file the FAFSA is to apply online through the Department of Education at http://fafsa.gov using your Personal Identification Number (PIN) number as an electronic signature.  Both parents and students can sign their FAFSA online using their PIN number.

For 2008-2009 (the academic year beginning in August of 2008), the earliest date to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is January 1st, 2008. If you have not received your PIN number, both parents and students can also request a PIN online by visiting http://pin.ed.gov (the parent's PIN is different from the student's PIN).  In order to complete the entire application online, as signature or PIN is required from the student and a separate PIN is required from the parent, if a parent's signature is required.

You may also complete the online FAFSA without a PIN by printing a paper signature page and mailing it to the federal processor where it will be matched to the data that was submitted electronically.

Submitting the paper FAFSA instead of submitting the information online can extend the time required for the federal process to review the FAFSA up to eight (8) weeks.

Be sure to specify that you want your FAFSA information sent to the University of Dayton, Title IV code 003127.  Doing so will ensure that we receive the results of your FAFSA in a timely manner.

The Office of Financial Aid recommends filing your FAFSA by March 15th for the coming academic year.

Step 2: Review Your Student Aid Report
Once the federal processor has finished reviewing your application, whether you submitted it online or on paper, you will receive a Student Aid Report.  If you file you FAFSA online, you will be sent an email notifying you that can return to the FAFSA web site and view your Student Aid Report using your PIN number.  If you file the paper FAFSA and do not submit an email address, a paper copy of your Student Aid Report will be mailed to you.

The Student Aid Report serves as a confirmation that your FAFSA has been processed and includes a summary of the information you submitted on your FAFSA.  Be sure to review this information carefully and make any corrections necessary.  The Student Aid Report will not include information about your financial aid eligibility for the University of Dayton.  Your eligibility will be determined by the Office of Financial Aid using the data that you reported on the FAFSA.

When you receive the Student Aid Report, the data contained on it is sent electronically to the University of Dayton.  As long as you listed UD on your FAFSA, we should receive the information without any additional action on your part.

Step 3: Your Financial Aid Award Notification
Once the Office of Financial Aid receives your FAFSA data we will begin to prepare your financial aid eligibility for the coming academic year.  We will begin notifying students of their financial aid eligibility according to the following schedule:

late June or early July - returning law students

If we receive your FAFSA data after we have begun notifying families, you can generally expect to receive your financial aid award notification within approximately 7-10 business days after receiving your Student Aid Report. Returning student will receive a postcard notification when their award is ready to be viewed online through this website. Should your award be revised for any reason, another postcard will be sent to notify you that a revised award is now available to be viewed.

Awards cannot begin being mailed until we have reviewed each student's academic progress to ensure that they have met the minimum requirements for satisfactory academic progress required by the Department of Education. This review requires that we wait until grades from the semester ending in May are reviewed.  Students who have not met those minimum standards will either be placed on financial aid probation or may have their financial aid eligibility revoked. All students who do not meet these minimum standards will receive correspondence from the Office of Financial Aid regarding their situation.  Students whose financial aid eligibility has been revoked may appeal to have their aid eligibility reinstated on a probationary basis by submitting written appeal to the Director of Scholarships & Financial Aid.
