Electronic Loan Application Process

The University of Dayton uses two separate loan programs to provide students with the funds necessary to cover their tuition and living expenses while attending the School of Law.  These two programs have slightly different application procedures, please be sure to read the following information carefully.

Federal Stafford Loans
(subsidized and unsubsidized)

All students must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, each year to begin the loan application process.  You may file the FAFSA any time after January 1st for the coming academic year. For more information about filing the FAFSA, click here.

Once the results of your FAFSA have been received, the University of Dayton will determine your eligibility and provide you with a Financial Aid Award Notification detailing your award eligibility.  You may view your Financial Aid Award Notification online by clicking here.

The awarding and certification process for the Federal Stafford Loan program typically begins in June and continues throughout the year. For first-time borrowers, it generally takes 3–4 weeks for your loan(s) to be approved and disbursed, so we recommend that you file your FAFSA to initiate the process as early as possible.

First-time borrowers under the Federal Stafford Loan program must complete three (3) steps in order to receive funds.  While these steps may be completed in any order, both must completed before any Federal loan funds can be credited to your student account.

  1. File the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

We recommend filing online at http://fafsa.ed.gov using your Federal PIN number.  If you do not have your pin number, you can request one through the same website.

  2. Complete a Master Promissory Note for the Federal Stafford Loan program

Once the University of Dayton has reviewed the results of your FAFSA, you will receive a Financial Aid Award Notification that details your financial aid eligibility for the coming academic year (both fall and spring semesters).  We will begin the electronic loan application process by certifying the amount you are eligible to borrow automatically.  First-time borrowers will then receive information in the mail providing instructions on how to complete their Entrance Counseling Session and the Master Promissory Note. (As the Master Promissory Note is valid for multiple years, returning students who have already completed a Master Promissory Note should not need to complete another note if they enroll in consecutive years).

  3. Complete the Entrance Counseling Session for Federal Stafford Loans

The federal government requires that all new, student borrowers at the University of Dayton complete an information session about the Federal Stafford Loan program prior to receiving any funds.  The session may be completed online by clicking here. Returning students do not need to complete another counseling session until graduation.  Prior to graduation, you must complete an Exit Counseling Session to review your borrowing history.

Alternative Loans

The University of Dayton utilizes the services of Access Group, a private, non-profit lender specializing in loans for graduate and professional students, as their primary lender for students attending the University of Dayton School of Law.  As these loans are dependent upon a review of the borrower's credit history, students must complete an application and promissory note each year to apply for these loan funds.  The amount specified on the Financial Aid Award Notification represents the maximum eligibility for the coming academic year based on a standard student budget.
